© UNICEF Cambodia/2017

On 30 October 2017, the Ministry of Cults and Religion of Cambodia, with support from UNICEF Cambodia and financial support from Thematic funding, launched the Curriculum on Buddhist response to violence against children, jointly with the Booklet Novice Sokha under the presidency of the Minister of Cults and Religion H.E Him Chhem. The Curriculum has been included in the Buddhism education academy programme and is available in Khmer and being translated into English.

The Curriculum covers five main topics, namely child protection, violence against children, positive parenting and prevention of family separation, Buddhist response to violence against children and dissemination strategy. It aims to enhance the capacities of Cambodian monks to contribute to the prevention of violence against children and promote the role of Buddhist monks in protecting children vulnerable to and exposed to violence and those separated from their family, or at risk of separation. This will also contribute to the Government of Cambodia’s commitment to reduce 30 percent of violence against children and 30 per cent of children in residential care in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, Kandal and Preah Sihanouk provinces.
