The rights to survival, development and protection is an inalienable rights of every child and is guaranteed by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Every child should be respected as an individual person and an active member of their family, community and society.
There are some 1.3 million children living in Bulgaria, and all of them should enjoy equal rights and chances for development. But do you know that during last year alone, among Bulgarian children:
- 650 000 are at risk of poverty and social exclusion (which often deprives them of the opportunity to develop their full potential and grow up as meaningful adults and dignified citizens of the country);
- 21 000 are without education (which often deprives them of the opportunity to find realization on the labor market; youth unemployment in Bulgaria is among the highest in Europe);
- 3600 arevictimsofviolence (the data is based only on registered cases for which a signal had been sent; violence can occur anywhere and can happen to anyone, but most frequently is manifests itself as physical abuse within the family);
- 3000 arelivinginstatecareinstitutions (their presence there has an extremely bad influence on their development and abilities to socialize).
UNICEF believes that it is necessary for as many people as possible to believe in the Zero (zero children in poverty; zero children without education; zero children victims of violence; zero children in institutions). That is why every child has to have the chance to fulfill their full potential.
If we turn a blind eye to even one of all of these children and doom them to poverty, illiteracy, abuse and lack of family care – that is one child too many!
The opposite trend is already visible: many social problems that the Bulgarian society is struggling to address today – such as early school drop-outs and low educational achievements; behavioral deviations; abuse of alcohol and drugs; insufficient economic activity and productivity due to deteriorating health and low education – are all the result namely of missed opportunities for meaningful child development.
That is the reason why UNICEF aims at raising public sensitivity towards the difficult situation of many children in Bulgaria; to enhance public solidarity with children and families in need; to foster intolerance towards any form of violence. For that purpose, we have launched a campaign with two main focuses: advocacy and fundraising. The collected money will be used to support UNICEF’s programs for addressing those issues.
UNICEF Bulgaria’s latest Goodwill Ambassador – renowned singer Vladimir Ampov-Grafa – has joined the campaign.
