The campaign will show actual results achieved for children in Bulgaria
October 28, 2016, Sofia - bTV Media Group, UNICEF Bulgaria and partners join forces once again to attract attention and raise public awareness of the importance of realizing the rights of children in Bulgaria. Under the slogan “bTV and UNICEF: Together for Every Child” the campaign will show actual results achieved for children in Bulgaria through the partnership launched in 2008 that managed to unite people, companies, civil sector, government, state institutions, and media. Thus, mobilizing solidarity, professional effort, political will and financial resources in support to reach more vulnerable children and families.
The progress achieved in realizing the right of every child to live in a family environment is substantial – for the last six years there are over
13,600 cases of successful prevention of abandonment[1].
The number of children in institutions continues to decline and in June 2016 the total number of boys and girls in Homes for medical and social care and Homes for children deprived of parental care is 1232 children, 6 times smaller than in 2010 when it was 7500. (Source - ASA). All 25 Homes for children with disabilities have been closed. (Source - ASA).
Foster care as a temporary alternative to the separation of the child from the family and avoiding placement in an institution has evolved noticeably over the past 10 years and actually increased more than 40 times: 60 foster parents in 2006 to 2480 foster families in the middle of 2016 (source - ASA).
Thanks to the collaboration of thousands of donors during the bTV and UNICEF show "The Magnificent Six", we created family-counseling centers in Shumen and Montana to support families with complex needs.
Already 4034 families received parenting support which prevented the separation of babies from their families and consequently the placement of children in institutions, providing when needed suitable temporary foster care.
With the mission that each family is entitled to support in caring for their children, along with partners we helped create the Centers for maternal and child health in Shumen and Sliven.
9065 children and 8194 families have received the needed support from mobile teams of nurses for the period 2013-2015.
Despite the achievements, yet there are serious challenges to ensure the right of children to early childhood development, early learning and education. To support the realization of the rights of the youngest ones, in partnership with the state institutions, media and the civil society, we started building a proper inclusive environment in kindergartens focusing on children with special needs, because
in Bulgaria there are about 23,000 children living with a disability and for the 2015-2016 school year about 8000 children are still excluded from the educational system and social environment.
One of the serious breaches of children's rights that girls and boys worldwide are facing is violence. Bulgaria is no exception. There is not accurate data on children and women victims of violence and studies about social norms and attitudes supportive of violence are rare. To make visible the invisible, together we launched a campaign “Future without violence for every child.” Reports of violence cases trough the National telephone line increased but integrated response to victims remains a challenge. To support children and families victims and witnesses of violence, we helped create an innovative service - Child advocacy and support centers – ZoneZakrila in Shumen, Montana and Sofia. For one year.
he teams have helped 164 children and their families receive comprehensive care from a psychologists, lawyers, medical practitioners, and social workers.
On the eve of the 70th anniversary of the UN Children's Fund and as part of the strategic partnership between UNICEF and bTV during the last decade, the campaign “bTV and UNICEF Together for Every Child” will broadcast a series of stories telling in an ethical and friendly way the change in the fate of the children of Mogilino and other institutions; children in temporary foster care; children who live again with their biological families or in a family-type environment; children with special needs participating in kindergartens; children witnesses and victims of violence supported to overcome the traumas and to seek justice and remedies; and babies enjoying their right of having the best start in life. The stories will be broadcast every Saturday in the show "This Saturday" and will be presented by the show host Mariana Vekilska and the reporter Alexandra Krusteva who has established themselves as one of the most trusted friends and advocates of children and their rights. Stories and discussions on this issue will be included in the news emissions and other tv shows of Btv.
The culmination of all these efforts will be a fundraising concert-telethon on bTV on November 26 (Saturday, 20:00). For yet another year, hundreds of celebrities from the spheres of the music, movies, sports, favorite people from bTV, many public figures, representatives of business and NGOs - will join forces in a common cause: every child in Bulgaria to realize his/her rights and have a chance to develop his/her full potential.
