Sofia, 30 November 2023 - For the fourth consecutive year FANTASTICO, together with its clients and employees, has partnered with UNICEF to support the children of Bulgaria. The two organizations are once again joining forces in a campaign for a safe school environment and the prevention of bullying and violence at school.

A fundraising campaign will take place in all of the retailer's 45 supermarkets between 30 November 2023 and 3 January 2024. During the initiative, the chain's customers will have the opportunity to make a donation of BGN 1 (one lev) or more, and the donation will be reflected with a separate item on the receipt. The donation is not tied to a purchase and anyone who wishes to support the cause can do so at the FANTASTICO cash registers and without shopping in the chain's supermarkets.

The funds raised will support the expansion of UNICEF's Steps Together to Violence-Free Schools programme. It involves a holistic approach to achieving a positive school environment that involves students, teachers and parents.

According to UNICEF, violence in schools is on the rise and incidents of physical, verbal and cyber bullying are increasing. The number of registered cases of bullying and violence in Bulgaria in the last school year was 3 300. However, many of them remain hidden. According to a study commissioned by UNICEF, violence in Bulgaria in 2019-2020 is most common among children at school (38.3%), followed by in the community (37.6%) and at home (30.9%).

"Violence and bullying at school are among the main factors that hinder children's ability to learn and reach their potential. Together with the Ministry of Education and Science, and with the support of our partners at FANTASTICO, UNICEF is implementing the 'Steps Together' programme to build a positive school environment," said Christina de Bruin, UNICEF Representative in Bulgaria.

Thanks to the support of FANTASTICO and its clients, 3,000 students have so far participated in workshops to develop social-emotional skills. Special training for "Peacemakers", who help their peers in resolving conflict situations, has been given to 100 students.

"I liked that this project taught us empathy - to think about how something we do or say affects the other person. And this skill stays with us, it is a gift and it will not disappear when the program stops or when we finish school," says one of the peacemakers in the program from the 7th Secondary School "St. Sedmochislenitsi", Sofia.

"What is most important to us is the long-term effect of the initiatives we support. This is exactly what we see in UNICEF's approach and we believe that only when working sustainably with the whole school community will the desired results be achieved - a pleasant, supportive environment and higher educational outcomes", said Vladimir Nikolov, Operations President of FANTASTICO GROUP.

As a result of the company's partnership with the Steps Together to a Violence-Free School programme, 40 mentors from 22 districts across the country have been trained to support schools, 280 education professionals have been trained to implement restorative approaches and prevent professional burnout, 250 teachers, psychologists, guidance counsellors and principals have been trained to implement the workshops in schools, and 500 parents have participated in thematic parent meetings and community events.
