Christina de Bruin is the Newly Appointed UNICEF Representative in Bulgaria

UNICEF in Bulgaria will continue to work for a better future for every child under Ms. De Bruin’s leadership

Sofia, 09.06.2021. Christina Dorothea de Bruin is the newly appointed UNICEF Representative to the Republic of Bulgaria. Under her leadership, UNICEF Bulgaria will continue to work in partnership with the Bulgarian Government, civil society and private sector to improve the lives of children in Bulgaria, including the most vulnerable.

Today, Christina de Bruin presented her credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 

We highly value the active and fruitful cooperation with UNICEF on issues of common interest for improving the quality of life of the children in Bulgaria. Encouraging the rights of children is a main priority for Bulgaria, actively pursuit in all our policies and actions, stated Uliana Bogdanska, Director General “Global Affairs”.

‘I am honoured to represent UNICEF in Bulgaria and I am looking forward to work with the Government and partners to build a better future for every child. We will continue our efforts to bring positive change to children, to reduce equity gaps affecting children and to ensure that children’s rights are fulfilled’

- said Ms. De Bruin. 

UNICEF highly appreciates the global commitment and active role of Bulgaria as advocate for child rights and its work as co-chair of the ‘Group of Friends of Children and the SDGs’ and member of the UN Human Rights Council‘

Christina de Bruin has been working for children as an international civil servant for over 20 years. She has extensive experience around the world, working in humanitarian and development contexts including at UNICEF Headquarters. Prior to her current assignment, Ms. De Bruin worked as Deputy Director at the UNICEF Office for Relations with EU Institutions in Brussels providing leadership in innovative partnerships, overseeing resource mobilization and leveraging strategic partnerships. She represented UNICEF in global interactions with a diversity of EU partners at political and policy levels.

She has further served as Deputy Representative with UNICEF in Cote d’Ivoire, and held functions with UNICEF in Senegal, Sri Lanka, and New York Headquarters. Prior to joining UNICEF, Mrs. De Bruin worked at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Policy Advisor with the Human Rights, Peacebuilding and Humanitarian Aid Division.

In Bulgaria, she takes over from Dr. Jane Muita who has been UNICEF Representative for three years and has retired following her long-standing service with UNICEF.

Christina de Bruin is a national of the Netherlands. She holds a Master’s Degree in Public Policy and Public Administration from the University of Leiden and a Bachelor’s Degree in European Human Rights Law/Political Science. She is married and has two children.
