GenU entrepreneurship seminar sparks conversations and opportunities in Botswana
Inspiring ideas for a transformed future
UNICEF in partnership with the Government of Botswana recently hosted Tertiary Students Entrepreneurship Seminar, sparking conversations about; entrepreneurship and the opportunities that exists for young people in Botswana. The entrepreneurship seminar brought together over 80 young people aged 18 -24 years from the University of Botswana, Ba Isago University, and London College of International Business Studies.
The seminar aimed to ensure tertiary students in attendance were equipped with the necessary skills, shared experience, and motivation to support them in their endeavors. The youth panel discussion gave young people a chance to hear from their peers and other young people about the ins and outs of being an entrepreneur. Trevor Oahile emphasized that "there is never a direct route, but you have to start with something that could eventually lead you to where you want." An important message that expands on the idea that success is not linear there are obstacles along the way but the most important thing is to start.
Speaking at the event, the Acting UNICEF Deputy Representative, Mr. Samuel Phiri informed the attendees that GenU is an opportunity for partners and UNICEF to engage more with young people during the time of their life when they are "really productive and have the energy and adrenaline to work." The future of GenU is only successful as long as young people's lives are greatly impacted, highlights Mr. Phiri.
"Go out there and make things happen for themselves and for their country and to use their experience at the seminar for a lasting impact."- Tlotlego Makepe, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Office of the President
The over 80 young people networked with each other and the industry experts on the day and some left with potential mentors identified.
Participants also attended interactive masterclasses where they were trained on practical skills and insights necessary for running a profitable business. The facilitators shared real life examples while engaging with the young. The focus for the training was:
- Start-up masterclass: How to turn any idea into a business
- Marketing Masterclass: How to market your enterprise
- Finance Masterclass: How to manage your finances
- Growth Masterclass: How to grow your brand and Business
The Tertiary Students Entrepreneurship Seminar served as a catalyst for empowering young entrepreneurs and opening up new avenues of opportunity. Moving forward, priority and focus will be placed in sharing opportunities for young entrepreneurs, providing them with access to mentorship programs, and fostering a supportive network that nurtures their growth. Through creating an ecosystem that encourages collaboration, knowledge sharing, and resource mobilization, UNICEF, partners, and key stakeholders can ensure that no young entrepreneur is left behind.
The GenU team will work to ensure sustained efforts and partnerships, that will pave the way for a thriving community of young entrepreneurs who will drive innovation, economic growth, and positive change in Botswana.
