Minister Nović Signs the Pledge Committing to Child Survival: A Promise Renewed

10.12.2012. - Minister of Civil Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mr. Sredoje Nović, signed the pledge titled Committing to Child Survival – A Promise Renewed, thus symbolically pledging to accelerate declines in mortality rates and enhance living conditions for the youngest population in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this manner, BiH joined a global movement which now brings together more than 80 world countries.
"Continued commitment to children issues on a global level has contributed to declining child mortality rates through immunization programs, improvement of health practices, investment in education, commitment of governments and civil society organizations”, said Minister Nović, reminding that BiH has a duty under the Convention on the Rights of the Child to ensure all rights for every child. Minister Nović has stated that even though Bosnia and Herzegovina is not among the countries reporting high mortality rates, a lot can still be done to prevent violations of child and mother rights.
Head of UNICEF mission in BiH, Ms. Florence Bauer, stated that over the last two decades child mortality rates have been declining globally, which includes BiH where the mortality rate declined by 35 per cent over the past 10 years.
"Challenges lie ahead in terms of equality of children. Mortality rate has declined in BiH, however, it remains three times higher with the Roma population”, said Ms. Bauer.
By signing the Committing to Child Survival - A Promise Renewed, states pledge to intensify efforts seeking to reduce and prevent child deaths.
