UNICEF Belize is deeply alarmed and saddened by the recent incidents of gun violence, where a 2-year-old and a 10-year-old child were tragically injured in crossfires. These acts of violence are not only unacceptable they are a direct assault on the rights, safety, and future of our children.

Children should never be collateral damage in any conflict. Their homes, streets, and schools must be safe havens not battlegrounds. The shooting of these young children is a stark reminder of the urgent need to address violence in our communities and to prioritize the protection of every child.

Children exposed to violence are more likely to experience difficulties in school, social relationships, and future employment. The trauma can ripple through generations, perpetuating cycles of violence and poverty. Their safety is our shared responsibility and protection of Belize’s future prosperity.

UNICEF Belize calls on all members of society including the Government, civil society, community leaders, families, and individuals, to unite in safeguarding our children. Effectively tackling violence requires a proactive and holistic approach that prioritizes positive interventions with adolescents and youth. Recognizing that young people are at a critical stage of development, it is essential to provide them with opportunities for growth, mentorship, education, and psychosocial support. By fostering resilience, promoting life skills, and creating safe spaces for expression and empowerment, we can redirect vulnerable youth away from cycles of violence and towards constructive pathways.

UNICEF takes this opportunity to acknowledge its longstanding partnership with the Ministry of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, particularly through the Community Rehabilitation Department, in advancing Belize’s national juvenile justice agenda which aims to reduce crime and violence in our communities. This transformative programme is dedicated to reshaping the lives of adolescents and youth by providing second chances and fostering pathways to rehabilitation, with the goal of guiding them toward lives free from crime and violence and enabling their full participation in society.

In a noteworthy milestone, the Community Rehabilitation Department in collaboration with UNICEF, hosted the Youth Resiliency Awards celebrating 28 outstanding recipients who are actively transitioning toward a brighter future: one defined not by their past, but by their potential. UNICEF remains steadfast in its commitment to working alongside national partners to implement impactful programmes that create meaningful opportunities for every young person to thrive.

Every child has the right to live free from fear, harm, and violence. When we fail to protect them, or when they can’t access opportunities to realize their fullest potential, we not only risk their lives; we jeopardize Belize’s future. Their future is our collective legacy.
