UNICEF in the News

BAKU, November 17, 2017 – UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia Ms. Afshan Khan will pay her first official visit to Azerbaijan from 20-22 November, 2017.

Ms. Khan will meet with senior government officials, community representatives and young people to discuss progress for children in the context of the national efforts to spearhead fresh economic growth and the new global Sustainable Development Agenda.

Ms. Khan will start her visit with the opening of the 4th National Children’s Forum, organized jointly by the State Committee for Family, Women and Children’s Affairs, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and UNICEF on November 20th, 2017.

The Forum is being staged on Universal Children’s Day, the anniversary of the United Nations adopting the Convention of the Rights of the Child, which was ratified by Azerbaijan in 1992. The theme of this year’s Universal Children’s Day is “Kids Takeover” – an invitation to children around the world to take on adult roles for the day to share their ideas, opinion and innovations on the issues facing their peers.

During her visit, Ms. Khan will stress the importance of providing all children with the skills and opportunities to enable them to make a lasting contribution to the future of their families, their communities and of their nation. This, Ms. Khan will say, is how investment in children – especially the most vulnerable and under-served – can support sustainable economic growth, prosperity and opportunity for all.

Ms. Khan has been an international public servant for over 28 years. Previously she was the Director of Emergency Programmes for UNICEF, and she has also held other senior positions including Director of Public-Sector Alliances and Resource Mobilization; Associate Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa; and was the UNICEF Representative in Jamaica.

UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
