Albanian Children Repatriated
UNICEF Albania applauds the return of some Albanian children back to their country. These are indeed excellent news! However, this commendable achievement should not make us forget the safety and wellbeing of other Albanian children, some of them being orphans, who are still residing in the Al- Hol camp and elsewhere in the conflict affected areas. Therefore, in line with the best interest of the child and in compliance with international standards, UNICEF calls upon the Government of Albania to maintain its efforts to rescue and return all children back home and provide them with urgently needed care, attention and services.
Children’s physical and psychological recovery and subsequent social reintegration may take time and tireless efforts, and UNICEF stands ready to support the Government of Albania to achieve this objective.
We are also calling on the media and journalists to ensure that everyone acts with maximum care and ethics, so that race for sensational news won’t cost children more shock and trauma. Code of conduct and other safeguards must be adhered to in every possible situation and setting to avoid causing further harm to children in this very sensitive period.
UNICEF promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, in everything we do. Together with our partners, we work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
