EASTERN REGION EARTHQUAKE UPDATE - First 72 hours

On 31 August at 23:47 AFT, a magnitude 6.0–6.2 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, with its epicenter in Kuz Kunar District, Nangarhar Province, near the border with Nurgal District in Kunar. The quake originated at a shallow depth of approximately 8 km, about 27 km east-northeast of Jalalabad. The earthquake occurred on a shallow depth in an area characterized by steep terrain, weak adobe and masonry housing, and landslide-prone slo pes. These factors make moderate-magnitude earthquakes capable of causing significant impacts.
