The Junior Professional Officers (JPO) programme provides young professionals interested in pursuing a career in development an exceptional opportunity to acquire hands-on experience in multilateral technical cooperation. It offers them the opportunity to work in one of UNICEF's area of work, either at headquarters or in a country or regional office.

Compensation and benefits

  • JPO participants are entitled to many of the same compensation, benefits and allowances as their United Nations staff members with fixed-term appointments, with minor variations as per individual agreement with donor governments.

Career development initiatives for JPOs

  • Professional coaching: JPOs are offered a structured professional coaching programme designed specifically with the goal of strengthening the individual performance of JPOs in line with UNICEF’s competencies. This has a 360 degree feedback component which is geared towards personal development.

  • Mentoring programmes: The JPO Mentoring programme offers support and guidance to JPOs. Mentors are senior UNICEF staff members responsible for guiding JPOs through their initial assignment and future career transitions.

  • Career counselling: JPOs are provided advice and guidance by certified career coaches on preparing effective applications when they apply to vacancies as well as coaching on interviewing techniques.

  • Agora: UNICEF’s online learning portal offers a wide variety of online courses to JPOs as they work with their supervisors on preparing their development plans.
