Zambia Hosts AfricaSan4 Preparatory Meeting

LUSAKA (By Rufus C. E. Eshuchi/UNICEF Zambia) -- Zambia hosted the Southern Africa Regional AfricaSan meeting in Lusaka from 9th-11th October 2013, bringing together important sanitation stakeholders from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Mauritius, Madagascar, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, and host Zambia.

The purpose and focus of the sub-regional meeting was to bring countries together at a mid-point between AfricaSan conferences and in advance of the 4th AfricaSan event which will  be held in Dakar, Senegal this September. The meeting provided an opportunity for countries to:

  •  review progress on their sanitation action plans;
  •  review progress on the eThekwini commitments;
  •  and provide an opportunity for peer learning and knowledge sharing with other countries  within     their regions.

The planning meeting focused on country achievements since the last AfricaSan conference in 2011 and on the future with a dialogue around poor performing commitments and other sector gaps that were identified during preparation meetings as well as the implications of the proposed post-2015 sanitation targets.

The highly interactive meeting allowed country participants to guide their own learning according to their context and needs.

This proved especially useful given the diverse sanitation sector environment across Southern Africa.
