The drinking water ladder

The drinking water ladder presents drinking water coverage as a three-step ladder that includes the proportion of the population using:

  • unimproved drinking water sources;
  • improved drinking water sources other than piped water;
  • water piped into a dwelling, plot or yard.

It also presents progress made since 1990, the reference year for the MDG.
