To mark the day of the African Child UNICEF in West Africa is publishing a paper on the effects on children of the recent financial shocks in association with the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre, based in Florence, Italy.

The brief highlights how the effects will have long term effects on some of the most vulnerable children in the world and push many further back into poverty.

This year's day of the African Child theme  is "Planning and Budgeting for Children: Our Collective Responsibility" and calls on governments to put children first and allocate adequate resources to ensure that children have a chance of decent health provision and quality education.
