Follow-up consultation on the Task Force on Immunization (TFI) recommendation for communication for the Expanded Programme on Immunization-Polio
Dakar - Senegal, 05-07 April, 2008
In 2007, the Task Force on Immunization (TFI), meeting in Madagascar, recommended more data-driven and more evidence-based communication in the fight to eradicate Polio in Africa:
“WHO, UNICEF and partners should support countries to intensify their communication activities and to develop communication indicators to be systematically used in polio eradication activities in all countries. Progress towards achieving these indicators should be presented at the 2008 TFI meeting”
In line with these recommendations, the UNICEF regional office for West and Central Africa (WCARO) called a
technical meeting in Dakar on April 5 and 7, 2008. About 30 Programme Communication specialists as well as epidemiologists from countries across West and Central Africa - Niger, DRC, Chad, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Central Africa Republic and Liberia - and various UN agencies and international organizations attended the 2-day meeting.
The meeting focused on reviewing and updating priority countries’ communication indicators, and advising countries on how best to ensure proper use of quality indicators so as to better measure progress. Participants agreed on Polio & Routine Immunization standard communication indicators and specific country indicators. Joint recommendations were drawn up and clear mechanisms adopted to follow-up on meeting and country recommendations.
