Guinee Bissau - cholera epidemic finally ‘over’A seven month cholera outbreak which claimed the lives of 254 people in Guinea Bissau has been formally declared at an end. The Ministry of Health made the announcement on the 6th February after reports that there had been no new cases. The outbreak spread to a total of 11 districts and infected more than fourteen thousand people, the majority in the capital. UNICEF is continuing prevention and preparedness activities ahead of the next rainy season. These include finalisation with the government and other partners of a national emergency plan for cholera, latrine renovation in schools, main water supply connection for six schools in Bissau and public awareness campaigns in seven of the national languages.
