Introduction

In 2008, young people between the ages of 8 to 25 from around the world including those in rural areas and the hard to reach had a chance to promote and raise awareness on the prevention of injuries through questionnaires and interviews conducted by UNICEF Rural Voices of Youth members in rural communities.

Using a mixture of facts, puzzles, games and other visual material UNICEF and WHO through contributions from this young people have produced a child-friendly version titled Have Fun Be Safe. The report aims to inform children, aged 7 - 11 years, about various types of injuries and how these may be prevented.

Injuries and violence are important contributors to avoidable deaths in children of all ages, especially 5-17 year old.

Have Fun Be Safe is a companion to the Injury Report, designed to make the information in it accessible to children. The booklet's main purpose is to increase awareness, build knowledge, entertain and engage children with respect to injury risks, injury prevention and safety promotion. In particular, it provides information on actions children themselves can take to reduce risks and prevent injuries.
