From September 25 - 27, in Florence, Italy, experts from around the world came together to discuss how the world can jointly eliminate all forms of violence and discrimination against the girl child. At this Expert Group Meeting, UNICEF presented a paper called "Violence and Discrimination: Girls about Girls". This paper, based largely on Voices of Youth discussions, provided experts at the meeting with the opportunity to hear what young people are saying about discrimination and violence against girls and incorporate their ideas into the recommendations.
Background
The Expert Group Meeting marked the beginning of this year's Commission on the Status of Women. Every year, the Commission comes together to promote equality among women and men, girls and boys. This year's Commission will look specifically at the girl child and how the UN member states can keep their promise to eliminate all violence and discrimination.
