On the global level, as nations have developed and industrialized, they have increasingly used up natural resources (including water) and polluted the environment, with potentially disastrous consequences. For example, burning fossil fuels (coal, gas and oil) for energy is believed to contribute to global warming or climate change, which could increase natural disasters, including floods. In some places there might well also be more periods of drought, and deserts could spread.
