Without proper sanitation systems, extra garbage in cities create dump sites that can contribute to increases in cholera and diarrhoea, like this dump site in the northern city of Erbil, Iraq.
But, as the experience of the last couple of centuries has shown, development and industrialization can seriously harm individuals and the environment — without necessarily making the poorest any better off!
