Millions of children around the world miss out on their childhood because of poverty. There are 2.2 billion children in the world. 1.9 billion children are living in developing countries with 1 billion of them living in poverty. Poverty deprives them of basic services, like education and health care, which they need to survive, develop and thrive.

  • 1 in 3 children in developing countries lives without adequate shelter.
  • 1 in 5 has no access to safe water.
  • 1 in 7 has no access to health services.

It prevents them from enjoying equal opportunities and makes them more vulnerable to abuse, violence and discrimination.

Poverty affects everything!

Here is just one example of how: Children living in poverty often become sick because they do not have access to clean water. When they are sick, they cannot go to school, which is a violation of their right to an education. Without an education, children have fewer choices and opportunities, and are less likely to know their rights and make sure their rights are protected.
