The mothers of children who have been sexually exploited or abused stand outside the Centre for the Defense of Children and Adolescents in a major city in Brazil.
Compassion is appropriate, and certainly better than blaming the children. But beware of seeing the children only as helpless victims or “objects” of abuse. Children can also play an active role in helping themselves and others. They should be given an opportunity to express their views and tell their own story.
