Raising awareness on how to stay safe (Zimbabwe).

HIV is a virus (the Human Immunodeficiency Virus) that damages the body's immune system. Our immune system defends us against illnesses.

There is no way of getting rid of HIV once you have it in your body. People infected with HIV ('HIV-positive' people) may look and feel healthy for many years. However, even when they are feeling well they can pass the virus on to others. HIV is not curable, but new medicines can help people feel healthier and live longer.

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the late stage of HIV infection, when the immune system has been damaged to the point that people can no longer fight off illnesses.

These pages aim to give you the facts you need to avoid HIV infection.

Bear in mind that knowing the facts, though essential, is only the first step in avoiding HIV. You also need the skills and confidence to put what you know into practice: by avoiding risky situations, for example, or by talking to your partner about getting tested for HIV and about how you will protect yourselves. Look out for a special feature on these aspects of staying safe, coming soon.
