Eustice, 19, now cares for herself and her siblings since they lost their parents and older sister to AIDS (Zimbabwe). But looking after orphans may put heavy burdens on other family members and relations. Certainly older brothers or sisters who are under 18 should not have to bear the responsibility of caring for their younger siblings on their own. And relations' households may already be struggling to cope, so taking in orphans could put other children's and adults' wellbeing at risk. In areas badly affected by HIV and AIDS, many poor families and communities are made even poorer as working family members fall ill with AIDS and time and resources are diverted towards looking after the sick. |
