The 3rd World Summit on Children and the Media

UNICEF Executive Director Carol Bellamy and a speech given on behalf of the Swedish Minister of Culture Marita Ulvskog were among the keynote addresses that opened the 3rd World Summit on Media for Children, which was held in Thessaloniki, Greece, 23-26 March, 2001.
Both of these speeches stressed how important it is for media professionals to consider the Convention on the Rights of the Child to consider when preparing electronic programming materials for children. The texts of their remarks are available below.
The 3rd World Summit on Media for Children was sponsored by the European Children's Television Centre to place children's media as a high priority in all countries around the world.
The Summit programme gave emphasis to:
- developing audiovisual policy supporting children's rights
- providing a forum for innovative ideas and the sharing of experiences, including high quality programming for children
- promoting a dialogue between professionals and decision-makers working in both industrialized and developing countries
- bridging children's television and new media
- encouraging the participation of children in the planning and production of media programming
The United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children and the Say Yes for Children campaign, which aims to mobilise public opinion around children's issues among government leaders, business and society in general, were featured in many different Summit sessions, round tables and workshops. The Summit was a key early milestone in creating awareness of the Special Session and in building a Global Movement for Children which aims to ensure that all children, everywhere, have the chance to grow to adulthood in peace, health and dignity.
