About Iodine Deficiency

In 1990, only 20 percent of people in the developing world had access to iodized salt.  Today, thanks to a partnership between governments, international agencies, non-governmental organizations and the salt industry, approximately 70 percent of households use iodized salt.  Thus, protecting over 90 million newborns every year from a significant  loss in learning ability.

Despite this success, the challenges to ending iodine deficiency remain.  There are still many countries where less than half the population uses iodized salt.  Not only must salt producers and governments ensure that all salt is iodized, but people must also understand why they should use it.
