Help Build a Safer World

Sunday, 12 December 2004

For the 2004 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting, we encouraged broadcasters to help children learn and tell other children, and adults, about how to help build a protective environment in their community.

Children have the right to live in a safe world. Everyone must play a part in creating a safer world.

Millions of children are in danger of being:

  • sexually exploited or abused
  • forced to do dangerous work
  • caught up in conflict
  • orphaned or infected by HIV/AIDS.

There are ways of making the world safer.

Friends, neighbours, families and adults can all play a part in creating a safe community. Children need to understand how to avoid risky situations and where to go for help and protection.  With support, children can take action to change the world around them.

Broadcasters can play their part by:

  • helping children become aware of what’s happening in their neighbourhoods
  • reporting on ways to safeguard children
  • developing programmes on child protection and child exploitation
  • celebrating the positive action taken by children, families and communities.
