Congratulations to Kenya's Citizen TV and Brazil's Rádio Justiça, winners of the 2009 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting Awards.
The ICDB Award went to the broadcasters with the best programming that reflected the 2009 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting theme: Unite for Children - Tune in to Kids, and who demonstrated a overall dedication to youth-participation in media.
The awards were given out on 10 November 2009 at an evening ceremony at The Modern in New York. Read more about the event here.
This year’s ICDB Award nominees for television are ATN Bangla (Bangladesh, “Voice of Children”), Cambodia National Television (CNT) (“Youth Today”), Citizen TV (Kenya, “Angel’s Cafe”), Surinaamse Televisie Journaal (STVS) (Suriname, “10 minuten Jeugd Journal,” created and produced by The Backlot), Télévision Togolaise (TVT) (Togo, “A Nous la Planete) and Studio ‘Razom’ (Ukraine, “Big Secrets”). Each broadcaster has won their respective regional competitions and will be competing for the global awards. The 2009 ICDB Awards ceremony is hosted by television correspondant Suchin Pak and will be held on 10 November at The Modern in New York.
The International Children's Day of Broadcasting Awards honour programming that allows youth the opportunity to speak up and be heard. Programmes should be for young people and created with some aspect of youth participation. All television and radio stations that participated in the International Children's Day of Broadcasting can compete for these Awards. In a move to encourage more youth participation throughout the year, UNICEF considers not only the great work done for the ICDB but also the commitment broadcasters make to fostering youth and media on an ongoing basis.
The 2008 Award went to China Central Television (CCTBV) for their program “On the Road” and Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) for their program “Curious Minds”.
