UNICEF awarded the 2010 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) Awards to Télévision Togolaise (TVT), Voice of Nigeria and Maputaland Community Radio Station at its annual ICDB Awards Ceremony in New York.
Télévision Togolaise, the national broadcaster of Togo, won the television global ICDB Award for its weekly program “A Nous la Planete.” The program, hosted by young people, features debates and reports dealing with children’s rights issues. The episode broadcast on the ICDB focused on street children and working youth.
Voice of Nigeria and Maputaland Community Radio Station tied for the radio global ICDB Award. Voice of Nigeria, the official international broadcasting station in Nigeria, took the prize for its weekly program, “Kiddies Voices,” a magazine show broadcast “from the children to the children.” The ICDB edition focused on raising awareness around children’s rights issues, especially child trafficking and exploitation.
Maputaland Community Radio Station, a 24-hour station whose programming focuses on community and youth issues, took the prize for its 5.5 hour ICDB presentation “All Rights All Children.” The program was produced by Maputaland’s partner Zisize (Ingwavuma) Educational Trust, which trains children in radio production skills. The ICDB presentation included dramas, personal diaries, children’s news, studio discussions and call-in shows.
The awards were presented at the 2 November ICDB Awards Ceremony at the Modern restaurant in New York. It was hosted by Roscoe Orman, children’s broadcasting advocate and actor, best known for his 35-year role as Gordon on Sesame Street. Representatives from most of the stations traveled to New York for the ceremony.
All the nominees won their respective regional competitions and represented the best work produced in 2010 for the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (with the theme "All Rights All Children" and a commitment to youth participation in media.
The ICDB Regional Prizes for television went to ATN Bangla (Bangladesh, “Crossing the Hurdles”), Ethiopian Radio and Television Services (“Involve Me”, produced by Whiz Kids Workshop), TV3 (Malaysia, “Terubuk Masin Untuk PM”), C7 Sistema Jalisciense de Radio y TV (Mexico, “Palomitas de la Paz,” created and produced by Secretaría de Educación Jalisco), SOREAD/2M (Morocco, “ICDB Show”), Télévision Togolaise (TVT) (Togo, “A Nous la Planete) and UzNTT (Uzbekistan, “ICDB/Bolalar Hududi”).

In a move to encourage more youth participation throughout the year, UNICEF considers not only the great work done for the ICDB but also the commitment broadcasters make to fostering youth and media on an ongoing basis. To be eligible for the ICDB Award, the broadcast must have taken place on or around Sunday, 7 March 2010 in conjunction with the 2010 International Children’s Day of Broadcasting.
The International Children's Day of Broadcasting Award honours programming that allows youth the opportunity to speak up and be heard. Programmes should be for young people and created with some aspect of youth participation.
