Teenagers produce video about their lives
What are my rights? Why should I care about them? By Bobur Turdiev Tashkent, Uzbekistan, 1 November 2006 – What are my rights? Why should I care about them? These were some of the questions discussed by 20 young people aged 13 to 18 who gathered together from different regions of Uzbekistan last week for a video training workshop. They came together from a variety of personal backgrounds – some from orphanages, others from vulnerable families. Together they participated in the first OneMinuteJr workshop organized by UNICEF Uzbekistan, the Young People's Media Network (YPMN), the Yangi Avlod Media Club and the Sandberg Institute. Over five days, the young people learned how to tell a story in one minute via video. Topics were chosen by the young film-makers, who were also the actors, directors and cameramen of the films. “The workshop taught me about my rights and how I can describe them in one minute,” said Kamila Salahuddinova from Ferghana city. She and her mother have been denied Uzbek citizenship for about 10 years and as a result some of her rights are restricted. The participants were trained by Aimilia Mouzaki from the Netherlands and David Djindjinkhashvili from Georgia, arts graduates of the third-level Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam and Chris Schuepp, Coordinator of UNICEF’s Young People's Media Network.
At the closing ceremony, which was attended by UNICEF Representative Reza Hossaini, the film-makers’ videos were shown and certificates of participation presented. "I see the children express for themselves real emotion and serious concern about their rights,” said Reza Hossaini. “This workshop is an excellent opportunity to raise children voices in the promotion of their rights.” The OneMinutesJr is a project supported by UNICEF and the European Cultural Foundation (ECF). It empowers and encourages young people aged 12-20, in Europe and Central Asia, to use their creativity by developing and producing one-minute videos.
