UNICEF kicks off national vaccination campaign

Deputy Minister of health Dr. Niyazmatov opens vaccination campaign

Tashkent, November 12, 2007. Today the national campaign on measles and rubella immunization (vaccination) has been officially launched at the rural health care center of Khasanbay community, Tashkent district of Tashkent region. The campaign will cover more than eight million young people the residents of Uzbekistan aged 11 - 29. The campaign will start on November, 12 and last till November, 25, 2007. Ministry of Health hosted the press conference with participation of the representatives of the Children's Fund of United Nations (UNICEF) and the World health Organization (WHO) which provided technical assistance to the campaign.
As Dr. Nedret Emirogli, Acting Director of public health care programs, WHO/Europe, stated: “The government of Uzbekistan has developed a national plan on measles and rubella elimination and on congenital rubella infection prevention by 2010 in compliance with the strategy of WHO European Bureau. Taking into consideration the quality and effectiveness of the given action the Ministry of Health with WHO and UNICEF technical support has had a series of trainings for the health care workers who will be directly involved into campaign implementation. 15.000 workers of a primary health care sector have been trained. These trainings covered the most urgent topics related to the work with the population, safe immunization practice, vaccine management and immunization techniques. These health care workers will be involved into campaign as the members of mobile teams and territorial health care facilities in all the regions of the country.

Prior to the campaign, UNICEF and partner organizations like the Creative journalists association and the Network of nongovernmental TV studios launched the program on social mobilization and public awareness. Within the framework of this program orientation meetings for more than 700 journalists on the ground were held. Half a million of posters, more than three million of leaflets were developed and distributed. Popular show stars were involved into production of TV PSA for social mobilization and attraction to immunization of as many young people as possible.

Economic reasons in favor of investments into measles and rubella immunization remain irrefutable. This immunization is the most cost efficient in the field of public health care interventions expressed in quantity of the rescued lives of children and adults. The vaccine which has been in use for over 30 years and costs about 400 Uzbek soums (0.35 USD), also includes the concomitant expenses.
