Tashkent, August 11, 2007 - The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in the Republic of Uzbekistan in collaboration with the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Republic of Uzbekistan (MOES) handed over the office equipment to the Training Centers of the Regional Departments of MOES. The ceremony took place in the framework of project of “Emergency Preparedness & Risk Reduction of Vulnerable Communities, Children in Uzbekistan” financed by the Department of Humanitarian Aid of European Commission (DIPECHO).
Speaking at the ceremony, the Deputy Representative of UNICFE office in Uzbekistan Andro Shilakadze said that it would be difficult to underestimate the necessity of disaster preparedness, especially in the country like Uzbekistan, which had the devastating earthquake 1966. Therefore, capacity building of the Ministry of Emergencies is one of the crucial steps in getting prepared to the natural disasters.
During the meeting the representatives of the Ministry made a presentation on current activities of the project, stating that the focus was made to train specialists from pre-schools and schools, policlinics and hospitals in six pilot regions of the country. At the end of the meeting each regional department of the Ministry received the set of office equipment, which would help them to work more effectively in training the population on disaster risk reduction.

Note on project
Decrease of disaster consequences – is one of the main vital problems, affecting different aspects of human life activity (economical, social, cultural). As the result of different types of disasters (earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornados, floods, mudflows, landslides, avalanches and volcanic explosions) for the past 7 years of the new ХХI century more than 350 thousand people were killed, and unfortunately, the number of victims continues to increase each year. The following types of natural disasters pose acute threats to Uzbekistan: major earthquakes, flood/mudslides and drought emergencies.
Department of Humanitarian Aid of European Commission (DIPECHO) funded UNICEF project on «Emergency Preparedness & Risk Reduction of Vulnerable Communities, Children in Uzbekistan» as first step towards development of the national plan of action on disaster preparedness. Project was initiated in April 2007 and is being implemented jointly with the Ministry of Emergency Situation, Ministry of Public Education, and Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The project was piloted in Bukhara, Kashkadarya, Samarqand, Syrdaria, Ferghana and Tashkent regions.
The main activities of the project: (а) increase of the population awareness through dissemination of information, involvement of population into activities on disaster preparedness; (b) improvement of the training process of children on how to behave before, during and after disasters, organized in kindergartens and schools; (c) coordination of the activities of the concerned ministries with the aim to organize the cooperation on disaster preparedness of the institutions on its places, in particular kindergartens, schools, medical institutions, makhalla comities; (d) institutional capacity building of the training centers under the regional department of the ministry of emergency situations through provision of equipment, methodical literature, staff trainings; (e) strengthening of local capacity through provision of trainings on disaster preparedness for personnel of kindergartens, schools, medical centers, makhalla comities.
