Why are so many young people being infected with HIV?

HIV is having an impact in Uzbekistan

HIV/AIDS is a local problem

Although low numerically in Uzbekistan, there is potential for a rapid escalation.

The majority of cases are currently intravenous drug users (IDUs), most of which are young people. Many of these engage in risky behaviour, such as sharing needles or unprotected sex (UNAIDS.2004). The stigma attached to drug use, prevents users receiving relevant information and help.

Increasing rates of sexually transmitted HIV indicate a significant risk of HIV spreading to the general population. One of the reasons is a lack of knowledge about HIV among young people.

In a recent study*, knowledge of HIV/AIDS proved to be high – 100% of young people have heard of the disease – however:

•  40% are not sure how HIV is transmitted.
•  23% did not know that use of condoms reduces the risk of HIV.
•  Less than 1 in 4 can name 3 correct HIV prevention methods.
•  Over 60% think it is possible to become infected with HIV through kissing, sharing dishes, and/or mosquito bites.
•  55% believe that there is nothing a person can do to avoid HIV/AIDS.
•  23% think that a person with HIV can be recognised at a glance.
