Activities

UNICEF activities in Uzbekistan aim to empower families and communities through a rights-based approach, which takes into consideration all social and economic factors which have a bearing upon a child's survival, development, protection and participation.

Early childhood
The early years of a child’s life are crucial, being the basis for future health and development. In Uzbekistan, children face numerous threats during this period.

Communities and families
The family plays a vital role in a child's survival, healthy growth and emotional development. Family experience, particularly during the first 3 years, has a lasting impact.

Child rights
Uzbekistan ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in 1992. Legislative and administrative steps are underway to bring domestic policy/legislation on children in line with the CRC.

Child protection
Issues of concern include institutionalization of orphans and disabled children, rising HIV/AIDS cases, the juvenile justice sytem, street children, child trafficking and exploitation of children.

Water, environment and sanitation
The economic and environmental legacy of the Soviet era, together with the geographical location of Uzbekistan in an arid region of the world, pose many problems.
