UK Parliamentarian Russell Brown visited Ukraine
Kyiv, 8 October 2010 - Well-known political and social activist, Member of Parliament of Great Britain and Co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Street Children in the UK Parliament, Russell Brown held a working visit to Ukraine following the invitation of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF). During October 6-8 Brown discussed HIV / AIDS challenges in Ukraine with senior politicians, and also visited health facilities for HIV-affected children and baby-friendly hospitals.
Brown held several meetings with the Ukrainian decision-makers, including Deputy Minister of Health of Ukraine Valery Bidniy and Chairman of the Committee on HIV / AIDS and other dangerous diseases of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine Svetlana Cherenko. "We cannot stop the AIDS epidemic in Eastern Europe without the support and protection of children and adolescents", - said Russell Brown during the meeting with Valery Bidniy.
Russell Brown urged to protect rights of all people living with HIV and those who are at risk of HIV infection, and especially vulnerable children and youth. "We must create an atmosphere of trust and help, instead of condemnation and isolation," emphasized Brown while in Kyiv.
He also met representatives of the Parliament of Ukraine, working on legislative initiatives concerning children, including Ukrainian MPs Kateryna Lukyanova and Olexander Feldman.
In addition, Russell Brown met parents and children visiting the Day care center for HIV-positive children in Cherkasy office of UNICEF partner organization All-Ukrainian Network of People living with HIV / AIDS and attended a football practicing of street children team in Kyiv.

Short background: Russell Brown worked in the Transport and General Workers’ Union before he was elected as Member of Parliament for Dumfries Constituency in 1997. After serving 8 years as Member of Parliament, Mr. Brown was elected as the first MP for the new Dumfries and Galloway seat.
At the General Election in May 2010 Russell Brown was re-elected as MP for Dumfries and Galloway with an increased majority of almost 7,500 and one of the biggest swings to Labour in the UK. Russell Brown is also a Co-chairman of the British Parliament committee on street children.
