Every child has the right to good quality health care
According to the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child Ukraine is committed to reduce child mortality, to combat poverty, malnutrition and child diseases, ensure good quality health care and inform the society about the health of children in Ukraine. The contemporary system of medical and health care for children in Ukraine should be reoriented, first of all, to prevention of children diseases. Besides, according to the UNICEF’s data 80% of all newborns in Ukraine are running the risk of a life with reduced mental and physical capacity due to nutrition low in iodine. Alarming fact is that only 6% of mothers breastfeed their babies during the first 6 months of their lives because the first 6 months breastfeeding is not only the way of providing young infants with the nutrients they need for healthy growth and development but also the basic protection from various diseases. UNICEF actively supports the development of the Child Friendly Hospital’s initiative. Currently in Ukraine every second Ukrainian comes into the world in the maternity hospital with a status of Child Friendly Hospital. In spite of insufficient funding and other problems of the health care system in Ukraine, there is development of contemporary clinics and hospitals where children have access to high quality health care.
