UNICEF street children team wins a football tournament in Ternopil
Ternopil, Wednesday, 14 October, 2009 - Today, the UNICEF Kiev team won first place in the children’s football championship in the framework of the Sports for Children tournament. The tournament took place in Ternopil National Economic University. Eight football teams from Kiev, Donetsk, Odesa, Ternopil and Lviv participated, as well as volleyball and streetball teams. The tournament was conducted in the framework of celebration of the 20th Anniversary of Convention of the right of a child in Ukraine and aimed to promote the right of children to development. The winning Kiev team as well as the Donetsk team, which took third place, and the Odesa team in sixth place, are participants of the UNICEF project, Red Card to Child Neglect. The teams are formed of children with risky behaviours, youngsters from crisis families and street children. Football training and competitions give children the chance for healthy development, socialization and rehabilitation among those who are the most at risk during adolescence.
