Child Nutrition

Within MICS 20-12, Child Nutrition covers the following topics: breastfeeding, infant and young child feeding (introduction of soft, semi-solid and solid food); iodised salt consumption and low weight at birth.

Only 19.7% of children under six months of age are exclusively breastfed. Median duration of breastfeeding among children aged 0-35 months is 12.5 months for any breastfeeding; and only 1.2 months for exclusive breastfeeding.

Appropriate complementary feeding of children from 6 months to two years of age: almost two thirds of Ukrainian children aged 6-23 months (63.7%) receive solid, semi-solid or soft food at least two or three times a day (depending on the recommendations for the specific age).

The overall iodized salt consumption throughout the country was only 20.7%. In Ukraine virtually all children (97.2%) are weighed at birth and approximately 3.5% of infants weigh less than 2,500 grams.
