UNICEF Turkmenistan launches its own website to spread the global message for Turkmen children

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, 15 August 2005 – The UNICEF office in Turkmenistan launched its very own dedicated website on Monday to raise the global profile of its work for Turkmen children and to highlight more than ten years of development collaboration with the Government.

The website, produced solely by staff from the UNICEF Turkmenistan office, provides insights into the lives of Turkmen children and into the ongoing work of UNICEF as we work with the authorities to fulfil the goals set out in the 2005-2009 five year development plan signed with the Government in March.

“This website is part of the global UNICEF initiative to fully utilise the internet to spread the message for children, and for us here in Turkmenistan it will provide information to everyone on our activities working alongside the Government,” said Mahboob Shareef, UNICEF Representative in Turkmenistan.

“This site will be UNICEF Turkmenistan’s window on the world and will allow millions of people, including donors, the media, educators, young people and the global general public to discover more about this country and the development work going on here,” Shareef added.

The site reports on the challenges faced and the successes achieved in a country that has come through dramatic change since gaining independence in 1991 following the breakup of the Soviet Union. Such successes include the fact that Turkmenistan is the first country in Central Asia to achieve Universal Salt Iodisation to combat iodine deficiency and was certified polio-free in 2002.

Also available on the new site, which will be regularly updated by UNICEF staff, are photographs covering all aspects of our work in Turkmenistan, plus news releases of recent significant events, including the Turkmen parliament’s decision in February to pass a law banning child labour and also the visit of UNICEF’s regional director on the occasion of the successful salt iodisation campaign.
