UNICEF organizes first ever Children's and Women's Rights Workshop for Turkmen parliamentarians.Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, 22 July 2005 – The United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, is organizing a three-day workshop on Children’s and women’s Rights in Ashgabat, from July 22-24, for new members of the Medjlis or Parliament, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Justice and the Institute of Democracy and Human Rights. This workshop, the first of its kind, came out of the annual work plan signed between UNICEF and the Medjlis which sets out all joint development activities to be undertaken this year. National consultants, who have undergone training provided by UNICEF, will conduct the three days of discussions, exercises and group work that will focus on the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. “This workshop is the first joint activity between the Medjlis of Turkmenistan and UNICEF and I appreciate the opportunity provided to the new members of the Medjlis to learn about the international instruments of children and women’s rights protection. This knowledge will further be shared and applied to the legislation adopted by the Medjlis,” said Ms Akdja Nurberdyeva, Deputy Speaker of the Medjlis of Turkmenistan. Seventeen parliamentarians and four representatives from the Ministry of Justice and the Institute of Democracy and Human Rights will take part in the three days of activities. The workshop will take place with the cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Medjlis and Ms Regina Molera, UNICEF Programme Coordinator in Turkmenistan, said she regarded it as another constructive outcome of the joint collaboration between the Government and the United Nations Children’s Fund.
