UNICEF organizes the first training on child-friendly schools concept in Pedagogical Institute.
11 May 2009, Ashgabat, Turkmenistan – UNICEF and the Ministry of Education of Turkmenistanhave completed four day training for professors and students at the Turkmen State Pedagogical Institute on a child-friendly learning environment concept and its relevance to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as on life skills based education.
The major focus of the training was an introduction to interactive methods of teaching in child-friendly schools that take into account active learning and participation of children themselves. Child-friendly schools promote five core elements, such as inclusiveness and gender-sensitivity; effectiveness for learning; safety and health of children; care and protection; and involvement of parents, families and communities in learning activities of their children and tracking their progress.
“It is the first time UNICEF and the Ministry of Education have organized training on child-friendly school initiative and life-skills based education for Pedagogical Institute faculty and students and we hope that UNICEF will collaborate with partners on training future teachers who play an important role in creating the child-friendly environment for children,” said Abdul Alim, UNICEF Representative, a.i in Turkmenistan.
Training participants were encouraged to think of expanding child-friendly learning initiative throughout the country schools and incorporate life skills based education into curriculum.
