UNICEF derives its income entirely from voluntary contributions. The two primary sources of these contributions in Turkey are government donors and private sector groups and individuals who contribute through the UNICEF Turkish National Committee, or through UNICEF National Committees in other countries.

Turkey is unique in having both a Country Office, which develops and implements programmes for children in partnership with the government and the NGO sector, and also a National Committee whose main responsibility is to raise funds in Turkey. Private sector partners are important for UNICEF in Turkey -- providing an ever increasing share of our budget -- but there is an urgent need to do even better, especially if goals such as getting 600,000 girls into school are to be realised. The private sector also has an opportunity to take an active part in programme interventions -- Turkuaz, the water company is a good example. In addition to making a cash contribution, the company has put its public relations expertise to work on promoting exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of a baby’s life. Likewise, the pharmaceutical company, İbrahim Etem Ulugay, which printed and distributed books and posters last year for the Haydi Kızlar Okula! campaign.

So there are many inventive and creative ways in which the private sector can partner with UNICEF and become involved in seeking a better future for children.

We would like to take this opportunity to appeal to our friends to consider being a UNICEF partner, either with small change or large donations. A new funding catalogue describing our priority funding needs for the coming year has just been produced for distribution to individuals and companies throughout Turkey and abroad. If you would like a copy, contact the Turkish National Committee or our Country Office. Your contribution doesn’t have to be huge -- individuals can make small contributions through the National Committee -- every penny counts and it all adds up to much needed funds for child development and protection.

You too can take part in making a real difference for children.
