Young people need a safe place to meet their peers and to explore the issues that affect both their environment and their future.

Background

There are very few services provided specifically for adolescents in Turkey: information available on their problems and needs is inadequate and professional specialisation for counsellors and health workers particularly in urban areas is insufficient. Inadequate support and lack of information at this particularly vulnerable period of life can contribute to youth making poor life choices, placing their own health and development as well as that of others at risk.

Life skills education, counselling, guidance and youth friendly health services should be made available to all young people.

As a pilot project, the Establishment of Youth Centres aims to:

  • improve the general health and development of youth;
  • reduce the vulnerability of adolescents by raising their awareness of the risks of unprotected sex;
  • increase awareness of the necessary methods of prevention of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) including HIV/AIDS through youth friendly training programmes, counselling services and the provision of protective and preventative health care services.

The Youth Centres Project will achieve these aims through:

  • identification of the needs and problems of adolescents; raising awareness of these needs and problems among professionals, families and the media;
  • building the capacity of professionals working with youth;
  • the provision of health and counselling services and life skills education for youth.

It is expected that the health and development of adolescents and the existence of effective support, education and health services for all youth will be improved.
