Dr. Nafis Sadik, one of three special envoys of the UN Secretary General for HIV/AIDS, visited Turkey on 14-15 November 2006.

Dr. Sadik is currently visiting a number of countries to support the fulfilment of commitments included in the Declaration on HIV/AIDS adopted by the UN General Assembly Special Session, which was undersigned by governments in 2001. Dr. Sadik is also conducting work in various areas to check and reverse the epidemic. Dr. Sadik attended several high-level meetings in Ankara in order convey special messages from the Secretary General and to collect information about relevant activities in Turkey. Dr Sadik’s programme of interviews included the National AIDS Commission, concerned Ministries, civil society organisations working in the area of HIV/AIDS and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey’s Working Group on Population and Development.
Preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
is one of the Millennium Development Goals adopted by the nations of the world in 2000 and, as such, one of the most important promises made for the future of the world.
