Dear UNICEF Friend,
As the Turkish National Committee for UNICEF we have made many important contributions to the education system in Turkey, especially in recent years. Hundreds of thousands of chidren who were not previously attending school, are enrolled in the education system now thanks to the Haydi Kızlar Okula! girls’ education campaign. During last year’s We’re Adding Schools! campaign, which we launched with the NTV channel, we promised to build 100 classrooms in the most needy regions of Turkey. Happily, we have exceeded that goal with the current total of 150 classrooms.
This year, on the occasion of April 23rd National Sovereignty and Children’s Day, we will launch the We’re Adding Preschools project. NTV’s dynamic and creative team will be with us, as always, and they will allocate a full day and night to UNICEF for fund raising.
UNICEF believes that preschools have a vital role in giving every child the best start in life. Where almost all five–year–olds attend preschool in the West, the attendance ratio is unfortunately very low in Turkey. So let’s ensure all every child’s equal right to this crucial cornerstone of their lives!
Currently, there are 13 provinces — from West to East and North to South of the country — in this project. The State Treasury will provide the land for the single–storey schools, which will be consist of five classrooms accommodating twenty children each as well as offices for the principal and staff, kitchen, canteen and toilet facilities. Children will be served breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks. Traffic safety will be taught in the schoolyard where, of course, the children will also play many games. Each preschool will have the capacity to serve 200 children in double shifts.
Construction costs amount to approximately 350,000YTL per school. Individuals and companies donating 30,000YTL or more will be connected live to NTV on the day. As an organisation relying on exclusively on donations to support our activities, we will be most grateful for your support.
Many thanks and warmest regards,
Professor Talat Halman
President, Turkish National Committee for UNICEF
Turkey’s first Minister of Culture
