UNICEF’s Regional Director congratulates Milliyet for the right emphasis in its ‘Daddy send me to school’ campaign.

Speaking at the regional launch of UNICEF’s latest Progress for Children report, Maria Calivis, UNICEF Regional Director for Central and Eastern Europe and Commonwealth of Independent States and Baltics (CEE/CIS) region, credited Milliyet newspaper’s campaign ‘Daddy Send me to School’ for the way it mobilised the public, saying that:

It’s an excellent job. Stressing the role of fathers was also right in terms of the social structure.

A step further

Declaring her confidence in the media for community mobilisation, Calivis said:

You can be an example to the rest of the media and other sectors. Here you have taken a step further.

Girls’ education faces social, cultural, economic, occasional geographical issues and problems arising from migration. These problems should have local solutions. You cannot apply the same formula all over the country. While one solution is appropriate in eastern provinces, a different one for the poorer areas of İstanbul may be necessary, for example.
