İstanbul, 12 May 2005 -- UNICEF’s latest Progress for Children report which shows the world’s impressive gains towards gender parity in primary education was launched in İstanbul on behalf of the CEE/CIS Region by Minister of National Education, Dr. Hüseyin Çelik, and UNICEF Regional Director, Maria Calivis.
The Progress for Children report is part of the many efforts by partners in the world community to ensure that both girls and boys have equal opportunities to go to school.
UNICEF, as one of the lead agencies in the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI), is committed to narrowing the gender gap in primary and secondary education by 2005 and to ensuring that by 2015, all children complete primary schooling. UNGEI is a partnership that embraces the UN system, governments, donor countries, non-governmental organisations, civil society, the private sector, and communities and families.
This report -- part of a series in which UNICEF will monitor progress for children in the lead-up to 2015 -- measures the world’s advances towards Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 2 and 3, which pursue universal primary education, gender equality and the empowerment of women.
