Noting that 4,068 girls not attending primary school, the Governorate of İzmir launched a campaign to ensure girls’ primary school enrolment by changing the attitude of their parents. A meeting was held at İzmir Girls’ Secondary School to publicise the nation-wide campaign launched jointly by the Ministry of Education (MONE) and UNICEF.

Staff from MONE and UNICEF as well as district governors, senior staff from the Provincial Directorate of Education and journalists attended the meeting. Since there were no representatives from non-governmental organisations, however, many seats in the conference hall were empty. Governor Yusuf Ziya Göksu whose dedication to the issue was apparent by his presence at the meeting stated that all means would be mobilised to ensure the school enrolment of girls.

Home visits

Mentioning that committees have already been established at the district level, Göksu said the home visits to convince parents will continue. The UNICEF Representative Edmond McLoughney said that this year’s stage of the campaign would cover 23 provinces in the country.
