Towards Good Governance,
Justice and Protection
for Children in Turkey
The Great Debate
The closing ceremony of the first phase of Towards Good Governance, Justice and Protection for Children in Turkey, the Government’s multi–sectoral project, which is funded by the EU and implemented with the technical support of UNICEF will take place from 14:00 to 16:00 on the 14th of May at the Dedeman Hotel, Ankara. The occasion will provide a platform to inform representatives of the European Union, Government ministries and institutions, children and their families — the main beneficiaries of the project — as well as the media about key results and achievements of Children First as the project is known by it’s shorter title.
UNICEF Representative in Turkey, Reza Hossaini, will open proceedings with a briefing on some of the key outcomes of the project since its inception in August 2006.
A forum discussion hosted by UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Tayfun Talipoğlu will immediately follow Mr Hossaini’s opening remarks. Project partners will speak about various models developed and piloted by their respective institutions and share their experiences drawn from the implementation of the models.
Most importantly, children who have been involved in or who may have benefited by the project will speak about how Children First has affected their lives, giving their opinions on the achievements of the project and any shortcomings that should be addressed in future initiatives.
Following the discussion, His Excellency, Ambassador Marc Pierini, the Head of the European Commission Delegation to Turkey will speak about Children First on behalf of the European Union.
State Minister Nimet Çubukçu will close the ceremony on behalf of the Social Services and Child Protection Agency (SHÇEK), which is the key ministry responsible and coordinating children programmes in Turkey.
After the ceremony, a short round of questions will be invited from the audience on the achievements of Children First and the future direction of the next phase of the project, Modelling Child Protection Mechanisms at the Provincial Level.
Children First is implemented by the Government of Turkey with financial support from the European Union and technical support from UNICEF.
