BANGKOK, March 14, 2011 - UNICEF is monitoring the unfolding situation in Japan following the massive earthquake and tsunami and is prepared to provide assistance to the people of Japan if requested.

As of 14 March, the Government of Japan, which has invested significantly in earthquake and emergency response preparedness, has not requested assistance from UNICEF.

“I would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to the people of Japan, who for decades have helped UNICEF respond to the needs of children caught in tsunamis, earthquakes, floods and conflicts around the world.” said Tomoo Hozumi, UNICEF Thailand Representative. “Our thoughts are with the victims of this tragedy and those affected by it. UNICEF stands ready to help the people of Japan at this difficult time.”

UNICEF has prepositioned staff and emergency supplies throughout the region to assist vulnerable children and their families during crises and emergencies.
